Key Actions

September is a good time to check in on your finances before we head into the final few months of the year. A little planning now can make Q4, and eventually year-end, feel a whole lot more manageable.

Here are a few things to focus on this month:

  • Take a look at your year-to-date numbers. Review your revenue, expenses, profit, and cash flow to see where your business actually stands.

  • Make sure your bookkeeping is caught up and reconciled. It’s much easier to make good decisions for Q4 when you’re working with accurate numbers.

  • Think ahead about cash. Set aside money for upcoming taxes, regular business expenses, and any larger year-end purchases you’re considering.

  • Keep tax deadlines on your radar. September 15 is the extended filing deadline for many partnerships and S corporations, while October 15 is the extended deadline for many individual returns.

  • Set a few goals for Q4. What would you like your revenue, profit, and cash flow to look like by the end of the year?

  • Start thinking about year-end and 2027. You don’t need a detailed plan yet, but now is a great time to start thinking about what you want next year to look like, and what you can do over the next few months to set yourself up for it.

Take it one step at a time. You just want to know where your business stands now, so you can be intentional about where you want it to go next.

Upcoming Tax Deadlines

A few important dates to keep on your radar:

September 15, 2026

  • Third-quarter estimated tax payments are due for individuals who make quarterly payments.

  • Extended deadline for S corporation (Form 1120-S) and partnership (Form 1065) returns for calendar-year businesses that requested an extension.

October 15, 2026

  • Extended deadline to file your 2025 individual federal income tax return if you requested an extension.

Looking ahead to year-end: Q4 is also a good time to start getting ready for 1099 season. Make sure you have W-9s on file for your contractors, review what you’ve paid them so far this year, and identify anyone who may need a 1099. Doing a little of this now can save you from scrambling in January!
