Q4 Planning: What does your business need next?

Q4 has a way of sneaking up on us. Suddenly, there are only a few months left in the year and you’re wondering where the time went.
But there’s still plenty of time to make meaningful changes in your business before year end.
The best place to start? Your numbers.
Look at where you are now
Pull your year-to-date Profit & Loss and take a look at your revenue, expenses, and profit.
Are you where you expected to be at this point in the year? Maybe revenue is up, but expenses have crept up too. Maybe sales aren’t quite where you wanted them, but your profit is stronger than you realized.
Your numbers can help you figure out what actually needs your attention instead of guessing.
Check your cash
Next, look at what you have in the bank and what you expect to come in and go out over the next few months.
Think about taxes, payroll, holiday expenses, large purchases, and outstanding invoices.
And don’t forget about money customers already owe you! Collecting overdue invoices may do more for your cash flow right now than bringing in new sales.
Decide what your business needs next
Now comes the important part: what are your numbers telling you?
Do you need to focus on increasing revenue? Cut an expense that isn’t pulling its weight?
Build up your cash reserves? Invest in equipment or software? Finally get some help with something you’ve been doing yourself?
You don’t need to fix everything before December 31. Pick the areas that will make the biggest difference and start there.
Start looking ahead
Q4 is also a great time to start thinking about what you want your business to look like in 2027.
You don’t need a perfect plan yet. But the decisions you make now can give you a much better starting point in January.
